One of many ways to catch water for filter.

Rain is great and clean enough for plants when you get it, but whether you have frequent rain, or have a drier rainy season you may want to catch and store what you can for filtering to drink or as is for watering your garden plants when you don't get as much. One way to catch it is to route your gutters (with an overflow bypass) to run straight to rain catch containers. Depending on how clean your roof and gutters are (rocks, dirt, etc) you may want to start off with something cleaner. A large tarp is good to cover a large area, and funnel it down to designated storage container. The tarp will start out clean and you can hang it up in, or tie it to trees to keep it up from the ground. You will however, want to  make your lowest point come to a "V" for channeling it where you want it. by stringing up a tarp for catching rainwater. It is a good start for cleaning, or water you plants as it is. I do plan on getting one hung for that reason and showing you a couple ways to get it to work for you. I am working on a few things for you here,

Until next time,

It's a new week and a new day!

I know I haven't been updating as much as I normally do and when life and my family calls I have to answer.
I plan on rebuilding the water filter with a new suggested addition as well as a repair to the leak and doing a better job than I did on the last video. I'm not happy with the last video and I need to add a few things like a tripod, better lighting and better video editing software... which cost money I don't have right now but, all in due time. Once finances and opportunity improve, I will be able to present more and better quality things that will help you at home for daily and emergency use.I can and will present to you things that you can use on a regular basis and some things for off-the-grid/emergency uses as well as necessities for emergency only. I want to bring to you more things you will find useful and of a beneficial to you nature. I can't read everyone's mind which is why I need feedback, opinions,  and questions. My sponsors not only look at traffic here but purchases as well which by going to purchase from some of my ads will reflect upon me vs. going to the address later and removing me from the equasion. Believe it or not it all has an effect on me here and how this site affects their business. If you don't  want to or can't post a comment on this site keep in mind you can email it to me at survivor.links@gmail.com and I can respond directly to it or if you choose I can post it as a third party comment here with, or without a username and respect your anonymity and privacy as you request.I really do like and want the feedback, opinions on project and questions. because it will help everyone here as well as you.  If you want to ask a random question to me via email to see how it ends up here, you can do that as well. I want to build your trust in me here. In due time I promise with interaction, things will only improve here! If you know of a supply or reference that will benefit this site and viewers, you can email me and I will review it, and may feature it here as ads or reviews for all. Please I know my viewers are not idiots or they wouldn't be here, we all need to learn new things, and can do it together. Let me crash so you don't have to!

Until next time

Any input on the new video?

I know it really wasn't up to what I had hoped because I had someone here that agreed to help by holding the camera so I could focus on building the filter. Twice in a row when it came time to do it and follow through with a promise... surprise, surprise,  it fell through. I guess sleeping and slacking is much more important.. Needless to say that no matter what apologies are offered the respect and faith in a promise is still gone.

Now on to more important things. Other than the fact that I had to keep stopping to move and adjust the camera, I could use some constructive and enlightening feedback on the video. Was it helpful? Did it show any needed points for construction? Please comment here or there and help me help you. Remember to keep it clean as there are going to be some of the younger eyes watching, and reading it. I want to keep all of it family friendly.  I know I still feel awkward in front of a camera, and it shows. Plus I am used to going straight to business and not much of an entertainer. Any points you can give to help make the videos more helpful or pleasing to watch will be appreciated.

  Thank you and remember,

The water filter video is up!

After hours of editing and uploading the water filter build video is up, the only thing I have noted since assembly and addition of water is a minor leak where the pipe comes through the can. I am going to have to take it all back apart and re-seal it from leaks. it has a drip that I am uncomfortable with.

Keep in mind water weighs about 8 pounds per gallon, plus the weight of the rocks and sand in this can will bring you up to a few hundred lbs. you not only want to make sure the can will be able to handle the weight, but the surface you put it on should be able to handle it it as well. I don't want to think about not making the investment for wheels to it, it's hard enough to move it around with them. It is for sure, a justifiable and worthwhile investment!
I did make a mistake by not testing it for leaks with water before putting in the rocks and sand, although I was in a hurry to get it done for the blog.. taking the time to check it for leaks first would be a good idea!
It will definitely be a good fail-safe to have for your disaster preparations in the event of the primary water supplies being interrupted. A back up is always a good idea!

I have finally gotten the water filter finished!

I got the water filter put together now, minus water and waiting on the pvc glue to set and dry. I did get video of it while I put it together. It didn't come out to great in my opinion because I didn't have anyone to hold the camera while I put the filter together, so I had to keep stopping the assembly of it to re-position the camera. But it's finally done, and I am just trying to piece it together now for youtube. I will update here as soon as I get it uploaded for view!

You can make several out of $20 in materials when they cost about $100 for ONE pre-made!

As I said before... the initial investment may seem big but, the $ savings will go several times over that!

New random ideas

I get random ideas from time to time, and my latest is a 12 volt water pump powered by a car battery to consistently pump water from  my rain catches, to a Bio sand filter. On a good rain with a good setup you can catch  hundreds of gallons of free water yo run through you filter. My plants don't respond well to city treated water so the catches benefit me frequently. the main dilemma for them is all of the leaves and other unwanted materials in my freshly caught rainwater. I am thinking over and will build a cheap as possible system to filter enough to water my plants leaving the needed minerals in it for my plant and in the same pre-filtering my water for the drinking filter. My thought is to initially run a common screen that is removable for annual cleaning when full from the initial water pickup point, then a another finer small sand filter ( 1 gallon sized) for anything that would damage the pump, and a vertical pipe straight up about 3 feet to the pump. I still have to work on the final details and could use some additional ideas and possible problems I may not be thinking about, but this is definitely something I think would be very beneficial to a home built water system with different accessible steps of level of filtration for a variety of uses.  I will start building these filters and systems with video as soon as funds allow me to (hopefully in only a few days).

Please feel free to contribute thoughts and questions in the comment box below..

More about Water

I am going to revisit water again because in order to better prepare ourselves, we need to understand it and it's potential the best we can. We all know that water is the base for life on our planet, plants need it to grow, we need it to live as well as every other form of life on this planet, We can go out and buy a ready made filter for any water we might encounter while hiking, camping, or just taking a walk... Without it we will only last a short time before becoming incapable of even going to get any. We need it for our gardens, cooking, and drinking, as well as our homes.

We can go on the route of self-sufficiency  and re-route our homes plumbing by a simple addition to our homes plumbing intake from city to primarily what we can catch in the rainy seasons, or just add a valve from city to our supply and back again when needed and it isn't even that difficult to do. It just requires a base plumbing knowledge and a little common sense does't hurt either.  You want to keep the main valv the utility company added so you can shut off the main line when cutting the one to your house and this will not affect the water company's ability to meter your use of their treated water with all of the added fluoride and chemicals too! shut off the main supply at the company's shutoff valve, and find the house side of the valve. Make sure you don't cut the water company side or you will have water everywhere and you will have a bill for repairs in the thousands of $$! You can also call the company to come out and establish the post valve/house side. Once you have established the house side of the shut off valve or post-valve you can find an easily (to you) accessible area to place your valve and obtain the galvanized steel area threaded  area to add your "T"  and your own shut off valve to control the water flow from the city water to your filtered water supply or  from the city water supply to back-flush and ruin your new bio-sand filter.  after the valve you can run the rest of the plumbing to your filter. Make sure you have your water filter and reserve tanks elevated as high as you can get them for gravity to give you water pressure! If you don't know what your cities water tower is for here is a quick lesson. the city pumps the cleaned water 100 = + Ft up to the top of that tower and your pressure in your home is compliments of gravity pulling it back down to keep equal and good pressure to all of the customers! You need to duplicate that on your own system as much as you can because a pump or just a filter can't do it on it's own. you need all of the post-filter reserves you can get and remember you need to keep it cool and dark where it is all stored. Otherwise you will have bacteria and algae growing in your fresh, clean water which will cause sickness you don't want to experience. All I can say on that is research, research, and more research before building the entire system. Don't just do what I say is possible before looking up all of the details for your family's and your health. Once you have successfully accomplished tying in your own water supply you can shut off the city water and then turn on your own supply. I can't stress this enough: One HAS to be shut off for the other to be turned on.  This is not suggested for normal use unless you have a steady supply of treatable water and remember to treat your own water after the filter,  average safe zone is  one drop of bleach per-gallon of water.

This is necessary due to people who want to blame others for their mistakes, and want an easy way to get money, I don't have any.-

Disclaimer and liability waiver:
What you build is on your own account and your own responsibility and I will not be held responsible if you don't do the proper research before construction of this system. I am not one for you to think of suing if you don't research it first and build this on your own liability. I am broke and do not own a house or anything of value, I rent and have no bank account! Just remember you can't get blood out of a Turnip.
*Remember, if you build this it is at your own risk and I will not be held responsible or liable in any way. Research will be your best friend in this matter I am just uncovering what is possible.

More on currencies and possibilities.

Good morning,
There is a lot to be said about any aspect of preparing, and I have only scratched the surface on any part of it.
We need to start from the bottom at understanding, and work our way up. but things will progress, I promise.
I think I am going to fill a little more in on the currencies and possibilities today.  We all know that gold and silver have been progressing in value and a small investment in them is just a start. We have to look at the basis of it, as well as the possible future of that basis. How much longer will we build on the foundation of "Precious Metals" (PM's) only to see the foundation built on another element? Gold and silver has been used for centuries, even Millennia because of it's difficulty to obtain, and rarity as a result. Right now both "PM's" are still used and are only increasing which makes an investment in them a likely choice but, what if the FG decides to start building the values on something we seem to have more access to in order to save the value of the US Dollar (USD) and  was to stockpile and build the value of other metals like Tungsten, Titanium, Platinum, or even Iridium ? How much of those do we have at home, and what is the possibility of our basis changing to save our economy? How do we know they aren't already stocking up on one of these and we won't know until they have increased the value so much we won't be able to find, or get it? I'm not saying we should go out and buy it up, but I am saying to watch the monetary values and if you think one may be potentially a good candidate for such a change, you may choose to jump on the chance to obtain some of one or even all..
Just my thoughts on possibilities..

Going back to topic of gold and silver, I know I bought a small silver necklace 11 years ago for $20 and now it's worth over $50-$60! we can buy it in small or even huge quantities, and all it seems to be doing is increasing in value. Who knows if it will fall to a fraction of what it is now, or increase 100 fold? We don't and take our chances on anticipation... What we know now is what we see, and that is where gold and silver are now, and where the value has been fluctuating. As I said before old coins have either PM in their content and
for the most part we know where to find them. Pawn shops, thrift stores, garage sales, and etc... Relatives may have some they forgot about and be willing to get rid of, or may want to keep them because they know what's going on with it. Our Elders have been through the moments in history we only read about and because of that they had to learn ways to survive and make it, we don't even consider now. We have to face the fact that even though some Elders may seem "Nuts" but what happened in their lives to cause a stiffened or closed mentality? If they will allow it do some digging and picking of their brains and memories, and see if 1+1= 2 or 25, and when you have boiled away the constructs of the end result, does it make sense?  You never know what  a little QA might uncover!

Until next time

What if the currency we know fails?

Something a lot of us don't think of, or even like to think, of is the stability of our current form of  currency. They show lots of things on the "Prepper" shows on TV, and some people don't know enough to decipher what is real and what is only for TV. The possibility of our current form of currency failing is a real possibility. Silver and Gold have held their values for years, and Gold only seems to be getting stronger. Today we are going to cover Gold and Silver, and where to get it, sometimes free. Most real Prepper's won't let  some little pieces of valuable info out for the world because they don't want the easy supplies to start drying up. Silver can be found in older dimes and quarters.

coinsite.com

                                                 U.S. Silver Coins:

When They Ended and What They're Worth
In the early 1960's, the silver supply for the nation's coinage was dwindling rapidly. As Congress and the Administration debated over silver's future role in coinage, the silver market jumped 10% immediately, and another 30% by 1962. This set the stage for the complete elimination of silver from our coinage by the end of 1964.

Any United States dime, quarter, half dollar or dollar that is dated 1964 or earlier is made of 90% silver. In the dime series, all coins dated 1965 or later are clad coins and contain no silver at all. Quarters dated 1965 or later are all copper-nickel clad coins except for the dual-dated Bicentennial Quarters that were sold by the Mint in special Mint Sets and Proof Sets. These quarters contain 40% fine silver and have an "S" mint mark. They are different from the Bicentennial quarters you can find in circulation and were sold by the Mint at a premium to collectors.

In the Kennedy Half Dollar series, the 1964 of course is 90% silver. Halves dated 1965 through 1970 contain 40% silver. Halves dated 1971 or later are copper-nickel clad coins with the exception again of the special Bicentennial halves sold in the Mint Sets and Proof Sets with the "S" mint mark, which are 40% silver. Among Eisenhower dollars, coins dated from 1971 through 1974 with the S mintmark are 40% silver. In addition, the special Bicentennial Sets contained 40% silver coins. All other Eisenhower dollars are copper-nickel clad coins.

The value of these coins is tied directly to the price of silver. At $35 per ounce, 90% silver coins are worth about twenty times their face value. A dime would be worth about $2, a quarter about $5, and a half dollar, about $10. At the same silver price of $35, 40% silver half dollars are worth approximately $4.00 each.

In fast moving markets, the prices for 90% and 40% silver coins can vary widely from the actual melt value of silver contained in the coins. Occasionally, even the retail price will be less than the melt value. In 1980, as silver approached $50 per ounce for the first time, and the public rushed to sell, $1000 face value bags of silver coins had a melt value well over $35,000, but were selling between dealers at about $30-32,000 a bag - reportedly due to a backlog at smelters. Conversely, as the Y2K scare heated up in 1998-99, the premiums on bags reached nearly 50%, even though silver's price remained essentially flat throughout 1999. More recently, as silver had its second run at the $50 per ounce mark, the premium on silver coin bags quickly rose once again, only falling to historical norms as silver's price retreated.

Obviously the older pre-1965 coins are getting harder and harder to find, but they still can be found. I have received a few myself in the most unlikely places for face value! They may be hard to find but they can be found with a small bit of attention. Every time you get change at the store or restaurant look check the years produced on all of your coins, you may have one or two and not even know it! You can also tell the distinctly different "clank" the silver coins have. That Quarter you just got for 25 cents may actual be worth $5.00! Keeping these older coins is a good start because of their silver content, not how "pretty" they may be. if the current currency we have fails and Silver/Gold holds value, it may be the only accepted currency. If not keep in mind that saving it won't be a waste even if the dollar doesn't fail. Silver and gold are going up in value and just think, those 90% silver coins were worth 25 cents in 1964, in 2012 they are now worth about $5.50.... What will they be worth in 2060? Most pawn shops have a small stockpile of silver coins, and not many people come in looking for them so their investment just sits, and as the value of silver goes up they are only making interest on them. Go see what they have and obtain what you can. Wouldn't you rather the coins be gaining value in your home than a shop? If you can't find any in pawn or thrift shops. there are websites to find raw silver and gold for current values and are only a productive investment.

I see things getting harder and wonder how much worse it's going to get. I just came across some new publishing's and want you to keep your eye out for more to add to the page  "Media and Publications" I just added, things are getting more to where you will need to hide something as simple as a garden!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "Tree Hugger" but I do care about the well being of our small planet and it's future for us and our kids.. The portable garden is getting more and more useful, and I might look into building a concealed garden house for it like a greenhouse that looks like nothing more than a basic tool shed. I think a good addition to this might be awareness of what's going on all over, to add what's going on around the country for others to see.

My post yesterday doesn't mean that I have given up on this site, It's my baby and I will fight for it. I just ask for everyone else to spread the word as much as they can. I am looking at having vinyl rub on stickers made or other things  to sell and hopefully add some publicity and funds for the future of this site. Would anyone be interested in a 5 or 10 dollar sticker for your car, house or whatever that may start out as just the web address for this site? Please comment below on opinions and/or suggestions for the sites future.

Days may be numbered here

Things have been pretty hectic lately and I  have been unable to get on and have time to make any posts. Things for this blog have been looking very grim, and I have been looking for means for another way of income since this site hasn't netted me one dime. I'm doubting my efforts here and the 12 hour days I have spent here researching and trying to bring the best info possible and cutting time from my family to bring up a blog to have some sort of income coming in. Not one dime has come in from this site and I don't know how I can bring more here without something coming in. I can't buy the stuff to build and my efforts for progress here are costing too much. So unless I can make this blog bring enough to help pay my bills and some goodies to bring to it. I will be forced to shut it down and keep my info to myself. My family comes first. I have begged my  friends and family to spread the word about this blog to hopefully bring some new viewers and funds and it seems to be failing anyway. with only about a handful of viewers. Unless something starts happening here, the death of this site is coming. If things start to pick up and come together, I will have tons more to bring and looking forward to a very progressive future. To put things bluntly, my ads are 1/3, the Donate Button is 1/3, and the youtube is 1/3 of my anticipated income from this site. I gotten nothing from anything. It's like working a job for  month and you never get paid. Bills are stacking up and somethings gotta give and I really don't want to shut this down.  It's up to my traffic and income.
We'll see how things go...

Shopping list and prequal to water filter

My entry is a little late today so while I have time in the middle of the days chaos. I wanted to bring up a couple things.

When we got to build a few items like the bio sand water filter you will nee a  55 Gal or larger water container with a lid to hold the filter water to be processed through it, about 6-8 ft of 3/4" PVC pipe, 3 90* PVC elbows, Plumbers PVC glue and cleaner, the primer is an optional thing as far as I'm concerned. It wasn't used or around when I was training to be, and was a plumber and a threaded PVC end to glue on the end into and through the container. For inside the filter you will need some clean sand, peagravel, and regular gravel.

As I said before I am still learning, and am showing you as I learn some things. Some of it I already know, and in the combination of the two can show you a lot of thing most seem to just dance around

Wikipedia says-
"Most biosand filters consist of similar components. At the top of the filter there is a tightly fitted lid, which prevents contamination and unwanted pests from entering the filter. Below is the diffuser plate, which prevents disturbance of the filtration sand layer and protects the biolayer when water is poured into the filter. Next, is the filtration sand layer. It removes pathogens and suspended solids. Below the sand is a layer of smaller gravels called the separating gravel layer. This prevents filtration sand from entering the drainage gravel layer and clogging the outlet tube. Right below this separating layer is the drainage gravel layer, which supports the separating gravel layer and helps water flow by preventing clogging near the base of the outlet tube.

Filtration process

Pathogens and suspended solids are removed through a combination of biological and physical processes that take place in the biolayer and within the sand layer. These processes include:
Mechanical trapping. Suspended solids and pathogens are physically trapped in the spaces between the sand grains.
Predation. Pathogens are consumed by other microorganisms in the biolayer.
Adsorption. Pathogens become attached to each other, suspended solids in the water and the sand grains.
Natural death. Pathogens finish their life cycle or die because there is not enough food or oxygen for them to survive.
As was referenced earlier, different processes occur during different points in the filter running process. These can be broken down into segments of the filter running process: the pause period (idle time) and actual run of the filter.
During the Run
The high water level (hydraulic head) in the inlet reservoir zone pushes the water through the diffuser and filter. The water level in the reservoir decreases as it flows evenly through the sand. The flow rate will slow down over time because there is less pressure to force the water through the filter. The inlet water contains dissolved oxygen, nutrients and contaminants. It provides the oxygen required by the microorganisms in the biofilm. Larger suspended particles and pathogens are trapped in the top of the sand and they partially plug the pore spaces between the sand grains. This also causes the flow rate to slow down.

Pause Period (Idle Time)
Idle time typically accounts for greater than 80% of the daily cycle whereupon carious microbial attenuation processes are likely to be significant. In other words, most removal occurs during the point where water is in contact with the biofilm (also referred to as schmutzdecke). Unfortunately the exact processes that occur in the biofilm have not been identified and require further study.
When the standing water layer reaches the same height as the outlet tube, the flow stops. Ideally, this should be at a level that is high enough to keep the biofilm in the sand layer wet, but also allow oxygen from the air to diffuse through the standing water to the biolayer.
The pause period allows time for microorganisms in the biolayer to consume the pathogens and nutrients in the water. The flow rate through the filter is restored as they are consumed. If the pause period is too long, the biolayer will eventually consume all of the pathogens and nutrients and die off. This will reduce the removal efficiency of the filter when it is used again. The pause period should be a minimum of 1 hour after the water has stopped flowing up to a maximum of 48 hours.
Pathogens in the non-biological zone die off due to the lack of nutrients and oxygen.
Maintenance

Over time, particles will accumulate between the sand grains in the filter. Also, as more water is poured a biofilm will form along the top of the diffuser plate. Both of these occurrences cause a decrease in flow rate. Although slower flow rates generally improve water filtration due to idle time[APS1] , it may become too slow for the users’ convenience. If flow rate goes below 0.1 litre/minute, it is recommended by CAWST to perform maintenance.
The cleaning method known as the “swirl and dump” or wet harrowing, is used to restore flow rate. To do this, about one gallon of water is added into the filter before cleaning (assuming the filter is empty). The upper layer of sand is then swirled in a circular motion. Dirty water from the swirling is dumped out and the sand is smoothed out at the top. This process is repeated until flow rate is restored.
It is also recommended to clean the diffuser plate, outlet tube, lid, and outside surfaces of the filters regularly.
Removal of Contaminants

Turbidity
Results for turbidity reductions vary depending on the turbidity of the influent water. Water with high turbidity looks dirty due to sand, silt and clay floating in the water. Feed turbidity in one study ranged from 1.86 to 3.9 NTU. In a study water was obtained from sample taps of water treatment plants from three local reservoirs. It poured through a slow sand filter and results showed that turbidity decreased to a mean of 1.45 NTU . In another study using surface water a 93% reduction in turbidity was observed . As the biofilm above the sand ripens turbidity removal increases . Although biosand filters do exhibit a high reduction in turbidity, slow sand filters show higher removals due to a slower filtration rate .
Heavy Metals
There is limited research on removal of heavy metals by biosand filters. In a study conducted in South Africa, the filter was found to have about 64% removal of iron and 5% removal of magnesium.
Bacteria
In laboratory studies, the biosand filter has been found to have about a 98-99% removal of bacteria . Over a time period of about two months it was found that the biosand filter may increase in the removal for E. coli due to biofilm formation. The removal after this time period ranged from 97-99.99% removal depending on the daily charge volume and percent feed water amended with primary effluent to the filter daily. The addition of primary effluent or waste water facilitates the growth of the biofilm which aids bacterial die-off . Research in the field shows that implemented biosand filters reduce fewer bacteria than ones in a controlled environment. In research conducted in 55 households of Bonao, Dominican Republic, the average E. coli reduction was found to be about 93 percent.
Viruses
Lab tests have shown that while the reduction of E. coli from these filters is quite significant, the attenuation in viruses is significantly less due to their small size. In a study using to bacteriophage the removal ranged between 85% and 95% after 45 days of usage . A recent study has suggested that virus removal increases significantly over time, reaching 99.99% after a period of approximately 150 days.
Protozoa
In one lab test the biosand filter also got greater than a 99.9% removal of protozoa. In tests for one type of protozoa, Giardia lambia had a 100% removal for 29 days of usage. Another protozoa, Criptosporidium oocysts, showed to have a slightly lower reduction (99.98%) possibly due to their smaller size. This removal showed to be comparable to that of the slow sand filter.
Health Benefits

Studies in the Dominican Republic and Cambodia conducted by the University of North Carolina and the University of Nevada shows that BSF use reduced occurrence of diarrheal diseases in all age groups by 47% .
Field Use
In a study conducted by CAW-ST in Haiti 95% of 187 households reported that they believed their water had improved since using biosand filters to clean household water. 80% of users stated that their families’ health had improved since implementation. Health perceptions of the biosand filter use has shown to be more positive in long term users .
Types of Bio-sand Filters

Concrete
Concrete filters are the most widespread type of biosand filter, consisting of a durable outer core structure of concrete. Concrete is generally preferable to other materials because of the low cost, wide availability, and possibility to be completely constructed on-site. Concrete filter production further allows for entrepreneurship amongst the local community. The plans for the concrete filter are distributed openly by CAWST. Several versions have been developed. The CAWST Version 9 biosand filter is constructed with a higher maximum loading rate and although the filtered water passes EPA water quality standards it is not optimal  . Recent research establishes that contact time between the water and the granular material is the leading determinant in purifying water. The CAWST Version 10 biosand filter takes this into account as the volume of the water reservoir is equal to the pore space volume of the sand layer, with a maximum loading rate decreased by 33% to ensure stagnant water in constant contact with granular material.
Plastic
Plastic filters are constructed of plastic barrels, usually formed offsite. Plastic filters are easily transportable and come in a variety of sizes. Hydraid is the leading producer in biosand filter technology and is constructed of medical grade plastic with UV resistance .

I will build the filter soon and take video and show you the whole process..

What do you think?

Good Morning to another day!

As you already noticed I have played with the colors a little bit on this blog. The point to all of the changes were to not only have a peaceful and calming background that was less of a toll on the eyes. Also a more contrasting color on the text to make it easier to see and read! I hope it is more inviting to you, and makes it easier for you to read and enjoy.

Today's segment has got me thinking of and considering a few outside suggestions for the site. One of them being possible "Interviews" to conduct, and post here of true Survivors who have been through, and survived historic hardships like economic, viral, times of war, and more. I would like the input of my readers as well when I do decide to try this route. In example, How and what they had to do to survive those times and how it may have changed their lives for the better or worse. At the very least I would like you to comment and post some questions you would like to see me ask, and post here for everyone to read. Or even if you have someone you would like me to contact and interview, email me info for me to call someone to interview and please include their name, age, phone #, and what they went through to survive, as well as your name and # in case I have any pre-interview questions on what to ask and not to ask. I want to show as much respect to your referred contact as possible.

Now on to some more things to hopefully give you some more to work with or create ideas for something new you might have thought of or already accomplished. I love the positive input and comments.
For all of us to make it in whatever scenario we might encounter, we need to realize what we have, and what we need. What do you already have towards tomorrow? Is it food, water, guns, ammo, First Aid kit, or something else? What have you found to keep for long term storage? Foods that will keep quite well for long term are rice, sugar, salt, pasta, and some grains to name a few. If you want to keep foods you can store and not have to think much about about. A few you can look into are MREs or freeze dried foods like Mountain House. These are good quality foods that have up to a 30 year shelf life and taste as good as the foods you cook at home! Remember to keep a high calorie intake to provide fuel for your body in times where you need to be highly active and to check the calories per serving so you know that you can gt enough to stay active.

Until next time, I have more research and digging to do so I can provide for you...and

What will tomorrow bring for us all?

Good Morning all.
Where will the Road to Tomorrow take you....?

I hope everyone was able to see and recover some valuable info from the food list, and was able to get some ideas for foods to look into storage. Remember an Heirloom garden whether small, or large can produce some food and reproducing seeds for tomorrow. It will always return to you, what you put into it. Just remember to water each plant daily, and not to over-water.Once you and I get a better hold on canning we can keep more of our gardens output for future, and less plentiful production periods. You can build a small portable greenhouse pretty easily, and in really small locations and availability I myself have used a clear smaller plastic Tub/Tote for household goods as a makeshift early start greenhouse for seed starter and early smaller plant periods just by flipping it upside down over the pots. It will keep in the moisture and give the plants more of a temp they like.

To build a larger portable and fixed greenhouse, all you need is a  few 2" x 12" boards for the structural and supportive base laid on the edges in a rectangle or square pattern, some wire cattle fencing, and some roll plastic. You can put together any size that fits you needs and still keep it small enough for a few guys to pick up and place on a truck or trailer, to move it when needed! I do plan on building the things I suggest to you and giving you a detailed "How-To" and where to get all the parts so you can do it at home on your own. Doing it on your own can be rewarding in it self, you will feel an amazing sense of pride and accomplishment, and save the money you would normally pay someone else to do it for you, and be able to invest more in your own needs and Preps! I also plan on showing you how to build an in-dirt and an overhead watering system for your plants that will be activated and controlled just by turning on a water faucet from your rain catch system! It is so rewarding to see all of your hard work paying several times over, in home canning jars, and on the dinner table. You can grow at home more things than you would think you could and save money on gas going to the grocery store, old veggies and fruits rotting in the fridge, and ending up in the trash. Wouldn't you rather be able to go out and pick fresh foods, and never have them rotting when you are ready to use them? Plus, the industrial pesticides sprayed on large farm plants and getting in the soil for yourself and family to  consume. I can go on forever on how great it is to grow it at home, and to know what went into the plants, soil, and canning from start to finish. If you can't find heirloom seeds, you can order so many online from homegrown seed companies that have been around for generations, like Baker Creek Seed Company or Seed Savers Exchange that will have many, many varieties of heirloom seeds that will produce seeds from the crop that will grow new plants! If you want a good investment return, this is the way to go! Don't for get to look into nutritional plants as well as herbs such as Basil, Mints, Parsley, and Sage as well as "treats" like watermelons and cantaloupes ! There are so many things you can have fresh and safer at home you will wonder how you went so long without it! Don't forget carrots, potatoes, and even small fruit producing trees like apple, pear and so many more! You will be so much more independent of the stores and save so much money for more important things. We all can live a little better for less money!

Just think of a little math here, the money you will save when you can provide your own power, water, and veggies. The water and power aspect speaks for itself, how many more hard earned and hard gained dollars do you want to giving to multi-million dollar utility companies for basic things you can provide on your own for a fraction of the money you are spending on paying utility companies? Wouldn't you like to drop the money hungry million dollar companies, and have more for our own tight budgets? It's common sense dilemma here that you can easily solve, so shove that money you are shelling out for bills back into your pockets, and at the same time start living a lot "greener"!

Invest in a small chainsaw and hatchet, ditch the propane and charcoal for your grills, and start gathering up wood from trees you see around you that are being cut down, the flavor is so much better and it's free! Propane is only food for RVs. True BBQ from wood is so much better from the flavor it provides, you can try so many different woods for different flavors until you find one that suits your tastes. There are more ways to save money than most people realize, you can cut off the ball and chain from "Big" utility companies and stop feeding the beasts.. It's all up to you...

More on Food Storage

Good morning all!
I hope you all had an enjoyable and productive weekend and haven't forgotten to subscribe to this blog!
 http://feeds.feedburner.com/ItsNotOnlyAWayOfDoingButAWayOfBeing

I think we will progress into covering more on food storage today. With all of the storage and preparation roads and processes, there is so much to say and cover on any given route. I hope you can find one that is suited best for you. Unfortunately I cannot tell you what that may be, because each individual is different  and knows what suits them best. I can however give suggestions for you to contemplate, for you to get started and progress no matter what stage you are in.

Food storage and preparation requires knowledge of your family's and your own requirements. In a disaster situation Diets and most other weight management systems are out the window, and you will need to be on a high protein, and calorie intake to provide you with the most energy and capability, for possible relocation, and rebuilding. Most of us will have to go back to  the basics of laborious activities because the comforts of machines and such may be limited or non-existent. The best thing for everyone (including me) is to get improve your physical condition and keep improving your physical abilities so you are more capable  of taking on whatever challenges may be ahead of you. the last thing we all need is to only be able to run 10 feet and fall over! Our luxuries are taking a toll on our physical conditions causing unwanted results. Remember, in order to accomplish more, we not only need the will to survive, but the capability! Your food stocks need to reflect that. Make sure that what you put away will be the most beneficial to your bodies and will provide not only the vitamins your body will need for activity, but for your immune system strength as well because disease likes to run rampant in a mess. Good foods to provide protein are:

Proteins

Almonds
Beef
Black Beans
Cashews
Chicken
Chickpeas
Egg Whites
Eggs
Fish, Unbreaded
Flaxseed
Garbanzo beans
Hemp Seeds
Hummus

Pork
Pumpkin Seeds
Salmon
Seafood
Sesame Seeds
Soybeans
Sunflower Seeds
Tahiini
Tempeh
Tofu
Tuna
Turkey
Veggie Burgers
Walnuts
Wild Game

This is an all inclusive list, but some foods may not be right for your tastes, or preferences. Remember that no single food can provide  everything you need to be healthy. That's why it's important to choose a variety of foods from each category to meet your daily nutritional needs..

Veggies,
Asparagus
Avacados
Beets
Bell Peppers
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Collard Greens
Crimini Mushrooms
Cucumbers

Wild Rice

Miscellaneous

Canola oil
Dark chocolate
Green tea
Olive oil

This is a good list for everything your body may need, and some may not be available for LTS . Make sure you research everything for your particular needs and it's LTS capability. Starting a small garden would be in your best interests now, while avoiding the "hybrids". The seeds they produce will be worthless for continuation. Look for "Heirlooms" at your stores, and keep in mind if you have reached a "hardship and have had to get onto state food assistance, they wil let you buy food bearing plants AND some nutritional supplements on the assistance dollar. They cover it in hopes that you can be more self-sufficient and less of a demand on the FG dollar. Take advantage of it and at the same time, be less of a demand on the FG dollar. If you are like me, you are stubborn, and want to provide for yourself and go without assistance as much as you possibly can.

Food Storage beginnings..

I think I will cover the beginnings of food, and storage today..
First of all if you haven't started storing food in an "untouchable" storage area, keep in mind that the sooner you start storing food.. the better. when you start getting food to store, you will need to think of many aspects of it to cover. Knowing you can't think of everything you can still cover what you may forget. Some things may be unable to get in a disaster situation, and you may have a "neighbor" that has plenty of extra but, isn't willing to just hand it out because they will end up going without something because you forgot to get it. So they have a few things they for got to get and are now willing to trade for it. Now you both could end up better off, but what are you willing to trade or sacrifice "barter"? Fortunately for you,.. you were smart enough to cover that in you thinking ahead!  You managed to put things up and store you don't like, use, or really want but the "neighbor"  does and they want it as bad as you want what they have! So you go into your emergency stocks, and go to your "barter" preps to retrieve it. Now you are both ahead! See, because you were smart enough to think ahead to cover what you may not remember you are going to be ok.. Myself, I don't drink, but I put up and hide not beer, but liquor. Liquor  never goes bad, and only gets smoother and better with age. I am like most people and I do love coffee. Most people forget it or can't get enough or whatever. I store instant and brew coffee. Instant for if you are in a hurry, and grounds for brewing for when you have the time to wait for it. No matter what is and isn't your "boat", you can still make sure you don't start sinking when the water level raises.Barter preps are definitely a good idea.

Now to standard preps for you. Many things are out, and available with a long term shelf life that you can get at your local store and you need to keep an eye on and rotated, oldest in the front, and freshest in the back and there are a lot of things that go well beyond their "best if used by" date. That date is usually a FG mandatory date even though it may safely last well beyond that date, sometimes by years! I won't recommend anything but regulations, because I have to cover my own legal butt, If you do choose to go beyond that it is purely your own judgement, and there are ways to test it before consumption to get an idea of it's condition. There are the obvious mold growing, discoloration, smell and etc to look for.  But what about slime on meats and other indicators? Is it safe? My suggestion here is research, and more research. If you keep 50 cans of something you can open one yearly and inspect it. and see the stages of it's condition. Some long term food storage is better dehydrated, and sealed foods. If you want to do it yourself, I myself am still a beginner at canning and such but have learned a few things  the canning I have done for my veggies was the "hot water bath" method and turned out pretty good. I canned it in about Aug of 2010 and they are still looking good! I used a quart jar for my Jalapenos in water and about half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt. you want the water well over the veggies and after filling up the mason jar with veggies and water I put the salt on top, put the lid and ring on somewhat loose to let the air out as the temp inside rose  and set it in a "Canners" pot with water up to the bottom of the ring then I slowly brought the water up to about a Med-Hi setting to let the water inside the jar keep up with the water in the pot to about 20*F before boiling. You don't want it to boil. Once it got to about 200* +/-, I let it sit in there with the stove on for about 20-30 mins, after that carefully remove it, place it on the counter and tighten the ring and lid all the way down. and leave it there to cool for a few hours. With the lid tight as it's cooling, it will suck down the pop up button on the lid and seal it. Once it's cool they say you can remove the ring but not the lid. Do not break the seal on the lid!  I always leave it on as a precaution and it makes me feel better. That's it! I still have the can full of jalapenos and tried it a couple months ago, and giving it another canning bath (they advise you not to) Although the Jalapenos had lost a lot of their fresh off the plant heat (Like the ones in the store) they were still really good! This is something I am very happy I did and look forward to doing more of, once my lil garden is ready with enough to can at the same time. By doing it myself I knew what went into the food while growing and what went in to them again when canning. There's no better peace of mind for you when you feed your family with the food you have raised and canned, and know it's safe to eat! I love doing it myself, and look forward to a whole lot more! There are different ways to do it for acidic, and non-acidic fruits and veggies, meats and other things, make sure you research as much as possibel before doing it, so you know it will be done right.

I got a little carried away off of the original topic, but have much more for you in the future.

Until next installment.. Be Safe, and Happy Prepping!

Provide your own power!

Good Morning all!,

I am going to start today off by mentioning that I am still learning how to operate this blog and this morning I mistakenly deleted a couple of comments by my viewers and as much as I looked, I didn't see an "undo" option. I really love the feedback that I get, and love to read your input and corrections on my posts I want to give the most accurate info possible and did not intend or want to delete the comments I did and apologize for it.

On to today's segment.. I hope you are getting info from this blog that is beneficial to you and want to keep you interested and gaining more thoughts and ideas. I want to provide for you something you need and can use. Don't forget to tell your friends about this blog and help me get more viewers of like mind and hopefully add  more experienced advice to this site. You may have noticed the new ads (sponsors) on here by now, and I hope they will provide you with new links and places to look for stuff you may need So feel free to check them out, shop around for deals and maybe you will find something you are looking for. I am still in the works with a few companies to provide you with things that might be beneficial to you. When starting this blog I never realized the time and effort it takes to make something like this run, but I still love it!

I would love to hear what you have gained from this site, and maybe some things you would like me to look in to, and cover here.
I know.. "get to the point" right? .. For the past couple of days I have mentioned gaining your night vision, developing your hearing, moving as quietly as possible and even down to silent breathing. You must always pay attention and know your surroundings at all times to protect yourself, and your loved ones. Remember nature always provides what you need, you just have to look for it. Run through what you have accomplished by now, what have you done? Is it enough? What do you have now that you can't go without? If it wasn't there how would you survive without it? Would you need to provide it if you didn't have it? We have covered providing some of the things we take for granted. Now it comes down to providing power. Go through what you have, and what you need.  how many things that rely on power that you really have to have to survive? A generator is not always the answer, just like a light in the dark, it can be a beacon for unwanted visitors. A generator is easy to provide power yes but, after a month in a disaster situation could you find fuel, and oil? How long could you run it? We need to focus on a constantly renewable energy source I have been looking into Solar.. It's constant and free fuel you can over come the fact that it's limited to a few hours a day by building a battery bank. A battery bank is several car batteries linked together that receive a constant charge from the sun in the day, and provide constant power day or night. All you need to build a reliable power constant source are car batteries (Deep cycle are best for this), a couple solar panels, a solar regulator and and a Power Inverter. You can build a full system to provide power for your necessities i.e.. refrigerator, small TV,  emergency radio for status info, and more. Don't be left without knowing what's going on. Setting up a power system is pretty basic..

The more batteries you have, the more charge you can store, you can link them all up in a 12v system for an inverter like this..

"How can I use multiple batteries to
increase the Amp Hour rating while
keeping a 12v setup?"

Once you have a good place to store the power from charging, you can hook up a solar panel and power inverter, the power output depends on your needs and demands. Your setup should look something like this

Now you have a renewable energy and constant power source from a small initial investment!

Diagrams Courtesy The Inverter Shop

Now you are a step closer to independence from common sources and failures! When your surroundings have no power, you will have it, and you can run this setup in your home, car or even your RV!

The best things about solar is that it is silent, portable, and the sun is free!

Until next time, Be Safe, and Happy Prepping!

Practicing more in the dark..

Hopefully by now, you have tried the "Light Test" I mentioned yesterday, if not you are only hurting yourself by not realizing and teaching yourself what you are missing. Learning basic things like, natural night vision, and night hearing are a lot more important than you may realize and may one day come to be something critical you will need. In order to survive in a bad situation, you may need to know things that are a lost and forgotten art.
If you did try it and realized what you need to continue learning and practicing, well.. to put it bluntly, you are a step ahead of most of the population, and are learning to survive where most will not make it.
Survival is a lot more than just buying food and water where most people think it is. Survival is an art, like painting or drawing.. The only way you are going to get better is practice even the most basic things that most people don't even think about. Things that have been forgotten in the advancement of technology, and luxuries. If you can talk to older generations in your family, I strongly suggest it. Ask how they survived in hard times, and what they had to know, and learn. Most people, especially kids now think that the older generations may be out of their minds, or "nuts". Most of them are the way they are because they may have had to live through and survive scenarios we don't think, or want to believe, can happen. You have heard the old saying "history has a way of repeating itself. It does, good, or bad. If you don't have older family generations around to talk to,.. go to a nursing home and talk to the residents, you may brighten up their day by asking them about their lives, and bring back good memories as well.. Older generations have a wealth of commonly untapped knowledge that isn't in the "cleaned up for society" history books. Get the brutal facts, and in the process you will learn a lot. I'm only 33 and have spent most of my life doing what I am advising you to do, and in the process have spoken to some that have asked again my age, and told me "You have the wisdom of a man 20-25 years older thean you are." I have had people 10-15 years older than me asking me to come to their house and speak to a group of their friends for what I have learned. I am offering it to you, here. You need to realize one thing... You are never to old to learn and will never stop 'till you get planted in a box. I still know and realize there is a world I still don't know enough about. Learning, and knowledge is addictive, once you get a little bit, you want much more. Open your mind and mouth and ask the older generations to grant you th HONOR of their hard-earned knowledge and experiences. They will surprise you with what they may have had to do to survive harder times.

Ok enough lecturing {:).. On to what you came to read and more interesting things.

To learn to see and hear in the dark is just the beginning, you need to lean how to walk and move as silently as possible. Turn the lights out and listen to your breath, if you can hear it, someone else can too. Open your mouth and control your breathing to where you can't hear it anymore,.. even when you are out of breath...Listen. It's small things like that that can add up in a scenario where you have to be silent.

On movement- Listen to that as well, and remember.. if you can hear it someone else can too. Practice movement until you can't hear it anymore Start slowly, when you step don't slam your heel on the ground. More people do it, and don't realize it. pick your foot up and when stepping gently roll your foot down from edge of heel, down the outside of the arch, to your toes.Keep practicing in the dark and at the same time, practice picking shapes in front of you and learning how to identify them. The more you practice, the better. Try to do it as much as you can on a normal basis and, before you know it, you will be doing it regularly without even trying! Everything boils down to necessity and experience. The more you do it, the better you will become at it.

Don't forget to leave comments and questions below and remember others may have the same questions you have and you can help others with your questions and comments. Lets make this a two way communicative blog and remember,.. I don't know what you are thinking until you ask. Pride is a common failure.

Until next time, Be Safe and Happy Prepping!

*Review* Mountain house Beef stew

I just tried my 2 year old LTS instant Mountain House freeze dried beef stew and reviewed it, video is now uploaded.

What do you need to get first?

There are many different scenarios and each one has a different starting point.. For example, If you live in a disaster prone area, you need to look at the types of  natural disasters you have, and what is the most common thing to go out first. If you are just starting, and have nothing yet,  keep this in mind..

Necessity-

1) Water: Store bottled water, re-use empty milk jugs, get a portable water filter because you will need it when you are on the go,The human body cannot go without water for more than 2 days, if you live in a warmer climate and sweat the time is shortened depending on how much water you lose. That would be a first priority.

2) Food:  "The duration of survival without food is greatly influenced by factors such as body weight, genetic variation, other health considerations and, most importantly, the presence or absence of dehydration.
For total starvation in healthy individuals receiving adequate hydration, reliable data on survival are hard to obtain. At the age of 74 and already slight of build, Mahatma Gandhi, the famous nonviolent campaigner for India's independence, survived 21 days of total starvation while only allowing himself sips of water. In a 1997 article in theBritish Medical Journal, Michael Peel, senior medical examiner at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, cites well-documented studies reporting survivals of other hunger strikers for 28, 36, 38 and 40 days. Most other reports of long-term survival of total starvation, however, have been poorly substantiated. [Editor's Note: Reports of the 1981 hunger strike by political prisoners against the British presence in Northeast Ireland indicate that 10 individuals died after periods of between 46 and 73 days without food.]"

Our Govt keeps our personnel very active in training and in the field. Because of that, they are on a daily 2000+ calorie food intake so their bodies have the fuel to make the energy to go out and kick the crap out of Al-Qaeda. In times of active stress and a rebuilding scenario. We need as many calories per day to replace the ones we burn, so our bodies can  make the energy we need to keep going. So when you store food, you need to know the  amount of you are putting away to store, Shelf life, and rotating it, so the newest is in the back. Remember to keep it fresh and tolerable when you need it, there is an old prep rule: "Eat what you store, and store what you eat. " when storage food get close to it's limit and your funds are too, you don't want to throw away perfectly good food but, want to keep adding to your preparations. If it does get down to that, eat the older stuff and buy newer to replace it. That way you are still eating, AND keeping your food stocks up to date! It's a win-win!
Now, knowing you will be eventually eating your food stocks what do you want to have in them? Do you want all "Brussels Sprouts and Lima Beans.. Or do you want foods you can enjoy too? Don't stock foods you don't normally eat.. I myself, love Beef Stroganoff, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Macaroni and Cheese :)). SO far all of it is available dehydrated for Long-Term  Storage (LTS)! Instant Mac and cheese,  mashed potatoes, and canned Garlic Powder for starters,  and my sponsors "just add hot water" Dehydrated Mountain House: Beef Stroganoff! Or,.. you can look it up in MREs on the site.. You want to keep foods you know you will enjoy eating, Especially if you DO get in a disaster scenario, wouldn't you want to lessen the blow, with some foods you enjoy?
Shelter: You want to stay out of the elements, the rain, too much Sun and more. Invest in a Tent, small tarp or even large heavy trash bags. If you have nothing else you can make a trash bag rain catcher, rain coat, or even  rain-proof a stick-and-leaf small temporary roof! There are many things you can think of in a desperate situation.  I know from experience.. you can get pretty creative when you need to.
Learn to see in the dark: Venture around your house more often in the dark, learn to pick out and identify shapes. You can train yourself to see better without light in case of a power outage. Remember, flashlights are a "Here I am"  beacon to anyone wanting to steal what you have, or harm you and yours, the less light you need to function in the dark the better. Eliminating your absolute need for light in the dark may save your life.
Learn to listen to your surroundings in the dark: I cannot stress this one enough, you need to pay attention to every little noise, creak, step, breath, and rustle. Knowing the sounds and what makes them in a split seconds thought. I have found that even silent light makes "noise".. as ridiculous as it sounds try it, go outside at night when it is darkest and listen to every sound you can hear then, step under a street light a few feet away and listen again. You will notice you don't hear all of the sounds you heard in the darkest areas.
Practice these and learn what you can. I will return tomorrow with more.

'Til then.. Be Safe and Happy Prepping!

Cleaning plastic containers for food and water..

Have you ever drank water from a bottle and the water tastes more like the bottle, or whatever was stored in the bottle last? Nothing is more irritating to me than being thirsty and running to the fridge to my reused 1 gal sports drink container of tea, to take a sip and find out I have grape drink flavored tea! I like to re-use a lot of things, and really hate the idea of throwing out something I know I can use again for something else. After some enraged searching on that funny tasting jug, I found out how to get the grape drink flavor out and it works on the plastic taste too! Nothing but a little  Baking Soda and water mix soaking for a few hours works better! You can take about 20-45% Baking soda  and mix it with just water, fill up the container and let it soak for about a day, empty, rinse, and viola! Water tastes like water, and Tea tastes like Tea! Whatever your container tastes like, the Baking Soda will actually pull it out of the plastic for good! It is a good thought for food storage containers as well. Use this for new food buckets, pre-water storage plastic containers and more. There are a million uses for it, which is why it's one of many things that are good thing to store for emergencies.

I'm still trying to put together a few things for my readers, so I will end this entry short today.

Be safe, and Happy Prepping!
